The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was a country which was a Warsaw Pact Member. Also known as East Germany, it still lives on a Cuban island (Ernst-Thälmann Island). The island was sold to East Germany in 1977 because both countries were, is, and will ALWAYS BE COMMUNIST. East Germany "merged" into West Germany, but East Germany still lives on an island.
