The sky appears blue because of a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. As white sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, it collides with gas molecules, causing the light to scatter. Blue light travels in shorter, smaller waves and is scattered in all directions more strongly than other colors, making the sky appear blue to our eyes.
