Some ant species perform life-saving leg amputations on injured nestmates to prevent the spread of infection. This behavior is not random; they assess the location and severity of the injury before deciding on amputation. Amputations are more likely to occur with injuries to the femur (upper leg) where blood circulation is slower, allowing time for amputation, rather than the tibia (lower leg), where infection spreads more rapidly.
